"Fragrance-free" does not mean no fragrance.
In the United States, “fragrance” on an ingredient label is a catch-all term. Manufacturers are legally permitted to list dozens of aromatic compounds — some of them known sensitizers — under a single ingredient declaration: fragrance. It is a trade secret protection that has been in place for decades.

When a product says “fragrance-free,” it is saying: we did not add an ingredient listed as “fragrance.” That is a meaningful claim. It is also a limited one.
A product can be labeled fragrance-free and still contain individual aromatic compounds — essential oils, botanical extracts, plant-derived chemicals — that are listed by their specific ingredient names rather than under the fragrance umbrella. These compounds can smell. Some of them can sensitize skin. The product is technically fragrance-free. Your skin does not know that.
The term “scent-free” sounds more absolute. In practice, it is less regulated, not more — it most commonly refers to products that use masking agents to neutralize a smell, which adds its own chemistry. And “no fragrance added” typically means the product contains ingredients with inherent scent — the phrase is an acknowledgment, not an assurance.
None of these terms are legally standardized in the same way that “SPF 30” is standardized. They describe intent. They do not describe chemistry.
It is sensitization. It is not random.
Every Black person with reactive skin has this story. A product they used without issue for a long time — a lotion, a deodorant, a soap — and then one day their skin rejected it completely. No warning. No gradual escalation. Just a hard stop.
This is not random. It is sensitization, and it has a mechanism.
Fragrance compounds are haptens: small molecules that bind to skin proteins and, over time, train the immune system to recognize them as threats. The first exposures do not trigger a reaction — they build the immune memory. The second phase, the activation phase, can take months or years of repeated exposure. The reaction threshold is crossed at some point, and then even trace exposure triggers a full immune response. The years of using the product without incident were not evidence it was safe for your skin long-term. They were the latency period.
There is a second piece to this that makes it worse. Once fragrance sensitization occurs, it does not stay contained to the specific compound that caused it. A sensitized immune system operates with a lower threshold across the board — it is primed, pattern-matching more aggressively, and more likely to flag other ingredients as threats in the same way it learned to flag the original one. This is co-sensitization: one fragrance sensitivity that opens the door to others, and potentially to sensitivities to ingredients that had nothing to do with fragrance in the first place.
If you have a product that irritated your skin — that you loved and then could not use anymore — the reaction may not have looked the same everywhere. On the face, sensitization often shows up as a sudden increase in breakouts in areas that were not previously a problem. With a deodorant, it is usually burning in the armpit. In any area where skin folds against itself, the warm, moist environment amplifies a sensitizing ingredient significantly. What registers as itching or burning in a skin fold is not a minor reaction. That environment sustains inflammation — and sustained inflammation in skin with high melanocyte density is a PIH event.
Go back to the ingredient list on the product that caused it. If it claimed to be fragrance-free, look past that claim at what is actually listed. The ingredient that ended that relationship is almost certainly there.

Naturally occurring. Pleasantly floral. A known sensitizer.
Linalool is a naturally occurring compound found in lavender, coriander, basil, and hundreds of other plants. It has a pleasant floral scent. It also appears on the European Commission’s list of known fragrance allergens — compounds that must be disclosed on cosmetic labels in the EU when present above a certain concentration.
A formulator can include linalool in a product for its purported calming or antimicrobial properties. On the ingredient label it appears as “linalool” — not as “fragrance.” The product can truthfully claim to be fragrance-free. The linalool is still there.
Linalool is one compound on a list that includes limonene, citronellol, geraniol, eugenol, and dozens of others — all naturally derived, all commonly used in products positioned as clean, botanical, or natural. All of them potential sensitizers. All of them legally invisible under a fragrance-free claim in the United States, because they are not listed as “fragrance.” They are listed by name, for their individual functions, in a formula that tells you it contains no fragrance.
This is not an edge case. It is how that entire category of products is formulated. The botanical claim and the fragrance-free claim are both technically accurate. Neither one tells you what is actually in contact with your skin.
The ingredient list is the answer.
The most reliable signal is not a claim on the front of the package. It is the ingredient list on the back.
Look for the absence of: essential oils (tea tree, lavender, rose, eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon, bergamot), citrus extracts, fragrant plant extracts, and the specific sensitizers that appear by name — linalool, limonene, citronellol, geraniol, eugenol, and their derivatives. These appear regardless of what the front label says about fragrance.
Some brands build their entire formulation philosophy around this approach. Their fragrance-free claim is operational — it means every ingredient was chosen for function, and anything with aromatic properties that could not be justified on functional grounds was excluded. When a brand has made that commitment publicly and consistently, the claim is more informative. When a brand’s ingredient list includes botanical extracts with known sensitizing profiles right alongside a fragrance-free claim, the claim is marketing.
Your nose is an imperfect but useful preliminary test. A product with genuinely minimal aromatic compounds does not smell like much. One that smells distinctly of herbs, flowers, or citrus is telling you something the front label is not.
A sensitizing compound on a disrupted barrier is a PIH event.
Fragrance sensitivity and the inflammation it can produce follow the same pattern as any other inflammatory trigger on Fitzpatrick IV through VI skin: the melanin response is larger, the mark it leaves is darker, and it lasts longer.
A sensitizing aromatic compound on abraded or inflamed skin — after shaving, after a breakout, after any procedure that has disrupted the barrier — is not a minor inconvenience. It is an inflammatory event. And an inflammatory event on this skin type is a potential PIH trigger.
The people most likely to have sensitized, barrier-compromised skin are the people for whom fragrance exposure carries the most consequence. This is the population being sold the most products with essential oils and botanical extracts, framed as natural and therefore gentle. The framing and the biology are not aligned.
Fragrance in skincare is not categorically dangerous. It is a variable that carries more risk when the barrier is compromised, and more visible consequence on skin with high melanocyte density. That is the context in which to evaluate it — not as a scare, but as a factor that warrants specificity.

- Does the brand publish its complete ingredient list and explain why each ingredient is included?Transparency about formulation is a signal. It means someone made decisions and is willing to defend them.
- When the brand says fragrance-free, does it define what that means for their products specifically?Brands that have thought carefully about this will say so. They will explain that their fragrance-free claim means no aromatic compounds were included for fragrance purposes, and they will have made choices that support that claim in the ingredient deck.
- Does the ingredient list include essential oils, citrus extracts, or any of the named sensitizers above — regardless of what the front label says?If yes, that is your answer. The claim and the formula are not aligned, and the formula is what touches your skin.

That's not your skin being random; it's the immune system finally crossing a threshold, and once it happens, it can make your skin more reactive to other ingredients too. On our skin, that reaction is worse in the folds where things stay warm and moist, and any sustained irritation there is a PIH trigger. The fix isn't panicking about fragrance — it's reading past the front label to the actual ingredient list, and asking whether a brand defines what "fragrance-free" means for its own formulas or just uses it as a marketing word.
