01 What castor oil actually is

Castor oil is derived from the seeds of Ricinus communis, a plant native to tropical Africa and Asia. It is unusual among plant oils: approximately 90% of its fatty acid content is ricinoleic acid, a hydroxyl fatty acid not common in most other oils. This unusual composition gives castor oil a thick, viscous texture, a high refractive index, and a profile that is genuinely distinct from most plant-derived oils.

Traditional uses of castor oil span multiple continents: laxative, wound dressing, anti-inflammatory preparation, scalp conditioning. In Caribbean and Black American hair care traditions, castor oil — particularly Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO), a roasted variety with a distinctive color and scent — has been used for scalp health, edge laying, and general hair conditioning for generations. The traditional association with hair is longstanding and culturally embedded.

Castor oil is a real ingredient with real properties. The question — as with shea butter and cocoa butter — is which claims the chemistry can support and which claims the marketing appended.

02 The hair growth claim

In vitro possibility. In vivo evidence absent.

The most prominent commercial claim for castor oil is hair growth: that applying it to the scalp or to lash and brow areas stimulates new hair growth, reverses thinning, and produces longer, thicker hair.

The evidence for this claim is largely anecdotal. There are no well-designed clinical trials demonstrating that castor oil application stimulates hair follicle activity in humans. What exists in the scientific literature is limited to in vitro studies, case reports, and observational studies that do not meet the standard required to make causal claims about hair growth.

The mechanism proposed for castor oil’s hair growth effect typically centers on ricinoleic acid and its proposed interaction with prostaglandin E2 receptors — a pathway involved in hair follicle activity. In vitro studies have suggested this interaction is possible. The leap from “possible in vitro interaction” to “demonstrated hair growth in humans after topical application” is large and has not been made in peer-reviewed clinical research.

What castor oil demonstrably does: it is a thick occlusive that coats hair strands, reduces moisture loss from the hair shaft, and creates a protective layer that may reduce breakage. Reduced breakage means hair retains length better — which can look like growth when it is actually retention. For some people, this difference is significant and useful. It is not hair growth in the sense of stimulating new follicle activity.

For edges and brow/lash areas: the same principle applies. Castor oil as an occlusive may help retain existing fragile hairs and reduce the breakage and fall associated with mechanical stress on these areas. Evidence for actual follicle stimulation is absent. Evidence for a “growth” effect from retention is plausible.

03 The scalp health question

Plausible. Within limits. Wash it out.

Where castor oil has a more defensible role is scalp health broadly — not as a follicle stimulant but as an occlusive conditioning agent for dry or flaky scalp skin.

Ricinoleic acid has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in research contexts. The specific claim about castor oil’s anti-inflammatory effects on scalp conditions like seborrheic dermatitis is not well-evidenced clinically, but the general mechanism is plausible. A thick occlusive on a dry, irritated scalp provides physical barrier protection, reduces moisture loss, and may provide some comfort from the anti-inflammatory activity of ricinoleic acid.

The caveat: castor oil is extremely thick. Applied directly to the scalp in large quantities, it is difficult to wash out completely, can build up on the scalp and follicles, and may contribute to follicular occlusion if used excessively or infrequently. The traditional practice of hot oil treatments — applying castor oil in small amounts with heat, then washing thoroughly — was intuitive: use it for its conditioning benefit, then remove it rather than leaving it to build up. This is still the right approach.

For scalp application: small amounts, focused on specific dry or irritated areas rather than full scalp coverage, followed by thorough cleansing is more appropriate than the “coat the scalp weekly” protocol that many online guides recommend. Jamaican Black Castor Oil specifically — with its higher pH from the ash used in its production — may help with certain scalp conditions, but it also increases the importance of thorough cleansing after use because of that pH.

04 Where castor oil actually belongs

Specific use. Intentional. Not the daily everything.

In a skincare or hair care routine, castor oil belongs as a specific-use occlusive — not as a daily all-purpose treatment, but as an intentional application for particular purposes.

  • HairAs a protective sealant layered over a water-based leave-in on dry or low-porosity natural hair. A small amount on hair ends to prevent breakage during protective styles. Not as a scalp treatment applied daily.
  • Lash and brow areaIf used here, a very small amount applied to the existing lash or brow hairs themselves — not to the follicle skin — with a clean applicator. Discontinue if irritation occurs; castor oil near the eye is not categorically safe for everyone.
  • Scalp skin — specific useOn specific areas of dry or flaky scalp skin, in small amounts, followed by thorough cleansing. Not for overall scalp coverage or as a leave-in.
  • Body skinAs a thick body moisturizer for extremely dry areas — heels, elbows — where its viscosity is appropriate. Not for facial use in most cases due to comedogenic potential.
  • Mixed with lighter oilsCastor oil’s viscosity makes it blendable with lighter carrier oils, which dilutes the thickness and allows broader application. This is how it appears in many commercial formulations.
05 Reading the cultural tradition accurately

What it earned. What was added.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil specifically earned its place in Black hair care through consistent observed use over generations. The people who used it were observing real effects — specifically, the retention and conditioning effects described above. The traditional use was correct about what they were seeing.

The marketing layer that added “regrows edges,” “reverses hair loss,” “stimulates follicles” to that tradition was doing what cosmetics marketing does: taking an observed outcome and extending it to a claim larger than the evidence supports.

Recognizing this gap does not require abandoning the ingredient or its cultural place. It requires accurate expectations. If castor oil has worked for your hair or scalp — meaning the hair you have looks and feels better, retains length better, experiences less breakage — that is a real effect and it makes sense to continue. If you are using castor oil in the expectation of regrowing edges that stopped growing due to traction alopecia or a hormonal condition, the intervention you need is more clinical than any topical oil can provide, and waiting on castor oil while that window closes has a real cost.

For traction alopecia specifically: early intervention matters. The follicle damage is reversible in the early stages and becomes permanent over time. If edges have been thinning, the right response is to consult a dermatologist or trichologist who works with Fitzpatrick IV–VI hair types, not to increase castor oil application. Castor oil is real, but the hair-growth claim on the label isn't. It's about 90% ricinoleic acid, which makes it thick, moisturizing, and genuinely good at sealing in what's already there — that's why it shows up in edge and scalp routines across the diaspora. What the studies don't back up is the idea that it grows new hair. The "growth" people notice is usually retention: less breakage means the hair you already have holds its length longer, which can look like growth without being it. Used right, that's still worth something — a small amount on ends, or a light coat on the scalp followed by a real wash-out so it doesn't just sit and build up. What it can't do is fix traction alopecia or hormonal thinning; if your edges are disappearing, see a dermatologist who works with textured hair, because waiting on castor oil while that window closes has a real cost.
