Natural on one shelf, wearing the halo. Synthetic on the other, under suspicion. Artificial off in the corner, treated like a slur. Natural, synthetic, and artificial are words about where a thing was born — none of them tell you whether it does a single thing once it is on our skin. Origin is not evidence. And natural is not even a regulated word; nobody has to prove anything to print it on a box. Poison ivy is natural. Mercury, still sitting in skin-lightening creams sold to women who look like us, is natural. The word is a feeling, not a standard.
Our skin is not asking where it came from.
For an ingredient to do anything, three things have to happen, and origin promises none of them: the right form has to survive the formula, it has to get through the barrier, and it has to arrive at a dose shown to work. Delivery, dose, data. A plant named on the label answers not one of those questions.
For us this is not a thought experiment. Our skin keeps a record — a breakout, a bump, a patch of irritation, and the mark it leaves can sit long after the thing that caused it is gone. When the stakes are PIH, you do not get to guess casually.
Kakadu plum, and a Vitamin C somebody actually measured.
Kakadu plum is genuinely one of the most Vitamin-C-dense fruits ever recorded. That part is true. But the fruit contains Vitamin C is a fact about the fruit, measured in a food lab — not a fact about your skin. The food-science literature itself is careful: one analysis files the plum's Vitamin C under the uncertain, flagging oxalic acid riding alongside it.
Hold that against what we actually know about getting Vitamin C into skin: purified L-ascorbic acid only penetrates when formulated below pH 3.5, with a useful ceiling around 20% — a number somebody measured, on a defined molecule, on purpose. A plum extract in a serum is not formulated to that pH or dose, and nobody has measured it reaching anyone's skin.

“Made in a lab” is the reason there is data at all.
You can run a real study on a defined molecule at a known concentration. You cannot run a study on some plum, because it changes tree to tree, batch to batch, season to season — that is the quiet power of a synthesized ingredient. Niacinamide is manufactured. Azelaic acid occurs in nature, but the version in your tube is made to a fixed purity and strength, and that standardized version is the one with evidence behind it for PIH on darker skin. Built does not mean fake. It means somebody could finally measure it.
Natural is not proven to fail. It is a gamble.
Nobody has proven the Kakadu plum serum does not work. It might. It has simply never been measured — not proven to work, and not proven not to. That is exactly the problem, because that is the definition of an unknown, and we are already carrying enough unknowns: PIH that punishes the wrong move, a barrier asked to tolerate a lot, often an active already in the mix. A tested ingredient takes a variable out of that equation.

Shea butter is a fine occlusive. Aloe is fine. Plenty of plant ingredients have real data behind them. Watch the one that hides in both columns: fragrance is natural when it is essential oils and synthetic when it is a lab blend, and it is one of the top irritants either way. The real question is what an ingredient does, at a dose that works, delivered where it needs to go, without setting off the inflammation that leaves PIH on skin like ours.

Vitamin C
Works as: L-ascorbic acid, below pH 3.5, up to ~20%. A 15% serum holds roughly the Vitamin C of sixty-some oranges — and citrus on skin in sunlight is phototoxic, sometimes skipping redness and showing up only as a new dark mark.
Azelaic Acid
Works as: 15–20%. It occurs in wheat, rye, and barley, but the entire commercial supply is synthesized from oleic acid — there is no road from a trace in cereal to a 15% dose on your face.
Niacinamide
Works as: a low single-digit percentage, gentle and well tolerated on melanated skin. There is no skincare dose of Vitamin B3 hiding in your dinner — the topical active is built in a lab.
Squalane
Works as: the hydrogenated, stable form. Raw squalene is richest in shark liver; the fermented, plant-built version is the same molecule, more stable, with no shark in it.
Hyaluronic Acid
Works as: bacterially fermented sodium hyaluronate. It used to come from rooster combs — twenty thousand for a kilogram. Fermentation gives a cleaner molecule, no rooster required.
A label saying an ingredient is ‘natural’ tells you where it came from, not if it works. On melanated skin, untested natural ingredients are a gamble that can cause irritation and dark marks (PIH). The ingredients with the best clinical evidence for our skin — like pure Vitamin C, Niacinamide, and Azelaic Acid — are often synthesized in a lab because that allows them to be properly dosed, stabilized, and measured.
