Australia's health regulator pulled three of its products — the Brightening Oil, the Clarifying Cream, the Brightening Body Lotion — after testing found hydroquinone in all three at strengths that require a prescription. None of it was on the label.
What it actually applies to
These products are built for us and sold to us, in shops and online, for skin of color specifically. The people most likely to reach for them are the people least likely to hear when they fail a test. So hear it here.
What the science supports
Hydroquinone is not a villain. It is the strongest brightener there is, which is exactly why it is prescribed in measured doses for a limited run and then stopped. Used every day, at a strength nobody told you, on skin like ours, it can turn the mark you were fading into a blue-black stain that does not fade at all. That is called ochronosis, and it is the one outcome no cream can undo.
